Meriden
Skip as a base: it is a 20-minute village stop between Birmingham and Coventry, not a destination. Come only for the Heart of England Way or a quiet night near the airport.
Meriden is a small village on the A45 roughly halfway between Birmingham and Coventry, with a claimed spot as the centre of England. There is no railway station, so you arrive by bus or car. Two old buildings, a long-distance footpath and a handful of pubs and hotels are the whole offer. Treat it as a half-day or a single night, not a base for the West Midlands.

Get around
On foot. The village is small enough to cross in about 15 minutes, and the church, green and pubs are all within that. A car helps for Berkswell, Kenilworth and Warwick. Buses X1 (Birmingham, Coventry, Birmingham Airport) and X20 (Solihull, Stratford) stop on the main road.

- The Manor Hotel and the pubs sit here; everything is walkable in minutes.
- Strawberry Bank Hotel
- Roadside hotel with parking on the A45 edge; useful for one night before an early BHX flight.
Language
English everywhere, with strong regional accents and vocabulary; Welsh and Gaelic appear on signs and in some communities but you will never need them. Visitors mostly trip over words, not accents.
- Useful words: 'loo' toilet, 'queue' line, 'lift' elevator, 'pavement' sidewalk, 'return' round-trip ticket, 'cheers' thanks.
- 'First floor' is one above the ground floor.
- Politeness is indirect: 'I'm not sure that's quite right' can mean 'that's wrong'.
Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- No railway station: plan around the X1 or X20 bus, or drive.
- Buses are the only public transport after dark; check the last departure before you book a room.
- The A45 is a fast dual carriageway with no pavement in places: do not walk between villages along it.
A quiet village with low street crime. The real risks are the A45 dual carriageway, unlit lanes after dark and winter ice on pavements.
