Mérida
Give Mérida 3–4 nights: base in the Centro for the plaza and free evening events, or north near Paseo de Montejo for hotels and malls.
Mérida is the colonial capital of Yucatán state, about 1.5 million people in the metro area, built over the Maya city of T'ho in the 1540s. It is a base, not a beach: the Plaza de la Independencia, the Paseo de Montejo mansions and a daily run of free concerts and events fill two or three days, and Uxmal, Chichén Itzá, cenotes and the Gulf coast fill the rest. It is hot and humid most of the year, so mornings and evenings carry the sightseeing.

Scams and watch-outs
