Mérens-les-Vals
Stop for a night on the GR 10 or a day for the hot springs and Romanesque church; not a base for more than one night unless you hike every day.
Mérens-les-Vals is a tiny village (168 people) in the Ariège Pyrenees, best known as a stop on the GR 10 long-distance trail. Its draw is the natural hot springs, the ruined 10th-century Saint-Pierre church and easy access to high-mountain ponds. Most visitors pass through for a single night or a day trip from Foix or Ax-les-Thermes.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say 'bonjour madame/monsieur' on entering any shop, bus or office; avoid: Asking a question before saying bonjour — it is read as rude
- Cheek kisses (la bise): Follow the other person's lead; one to four kisses depending on region; avoid: Initiating la bise with strangers or in business
- Addressing people: Use 'vous' and titles until invited otherwise; avoid: First names and 'tu' with older people or staff
- Restaurants: Wait to be seated in restaurants; call the waiter 'monsieur' or 'madame'; avoid: 'Garçon', snapping fingers, asking for the bill before you are finished
- Conversation: Debate is a pleasure; food, politics and philosophy are fair game; avoid: Asking about salary or religion; loud voices on trains
- Dinner at a home: Bring flowers (not chrysanthemums), chocolates or a good bottle; arrive 10–15 minutes late; avoid: Cutting the tip off a cheese wedge or asking for ketchup
- Dress: Smart-casual in cities; covered shoulders in churches; avoid: Beachwear in town centres
Scams and watch-outs
- The hot springs are natural and unregulated: check temperature before entering; no facilities.
- The GR 10 trail crosses high passes (Col de la Coume d'Agnel, 2,470 m) – check weather and carry proper gear.
- The train station is small and unstaffed; buy tickets online or at a larger station before boarding.
- Many shops and restaurants close in the off-season (Nov–Apr); stock up in Foix or Ax-les-Thermes.
Very safe; the main risks are mountain hiking hazards (weather, terrain) and the unregulated hot springs (check temperature). Keep valuables out of sight when parked.
