Menton
Two nights is enough: one for the old town and Cocteau, one for the cemetery and gardens. Add a third only for the Lemon Festival or a Ventimiglia run.
Menton is the last French town before Italy, a compact resort where the old town is pedestrianised and most sights sit within a 20-minute walk. It is milder than the rest of the Riviera in winter and busier than its size suggests in February, when the Lemon Festival fills it. Use it as a quiet base for the eastern Riviera, or as a half-day stop between Nice and Ventimiglia.

Get around
Walk. The centre, port and old town are compact and largely car-free. The station sits above the town, a few minutes downhill to the seafront. Local buses run along the coast and up to the hill villages; the TER train links Nice, Monaco and Ventimiglia. Driving in is easy on the A8, but the one-way system and parking make a car a liability once you arrive.
See and do
Known for
- Fête du Citron (Lemon Festival)
- Jean Cocteau Museum and the Salle des Mariages
- Basilique Saint-Michel-Archange
- Cimetière du Vieux Château
- Gardens and citrus
- Border with Italy

Sleep
- Old town and port
- Pedestrian lanes, restaurants and the Cocteau sights on foot; no car needed, and parking is the hard part.
- Garavan (east, toward Italy)
- Quieter, close to the gardens and the Italian border; a 15–20 min walk or short bus ride from the centre.
- Around the station and Avenue de Verdun
- Best for a one-night rail stop: bags to the platform in minutes, shops and the beach nearby.
- Carnolès (west)
- Palais Carnolès and the western beach; a 20-min walk from the old town, flatter and calmer.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say 'bonjour madame/monsieur' on entering any shop, bus or office; avoid: Asking a question before saying bonjour — it is read as rude
- Cheek kisses (la bise): Follow the other person's lead; one to four kisses depending on region; avoid: Initiating la bise with strangers or in business
- Addressing people: Use 'vous' and titles until invited otherwise; avoid: First names and 'tu' with older people or staff
- Restaurants: Wait to be seated in restaurants; call the waiter 'monsieur' or 'madame'; avoid: 'Garçon', snapping fingers, asking for the bill before you are finished
- Conversation: Debate is a pleasure; food, politics and philosophy are fair game; avoid: Asking about salary or religion; loud voices on trains
- Dinner at a home: Bring flowers (not chrysanthemums), chocolates or a good bottle; arrive 10–15 minutes late; avoid: Cutting the tip off a cheese wedge or asking for ketchup
- Dress: Smart-casual in cities; covered shoulders in churches; avoid: Beachwear in town centres
Scams and watch-outs
- The climb to the cemeteries and upper churches is steep, with many steps; go early and carry water.
- Park near the port or at your hotel and leave the car; the one-way system is confusing.
- Summer heat and beach crowds peak in July and August.
- The Italian border is walkable, but Ventimiglia and other Italian towns are better reached by train or road.
- Check museum and basilica opening days before you plan a day around them.
Menton is a calm, low-crime resort; the real risks are the steep steps to the cemeteries, summer heat, and leaving valuables on the beach. Standard big-city care around the station at night.
