Menindee
Give Menindee one night, two if you fish or camp: Kinchega and the lakes need a full day, and the town itself is a 3 km walk end to end.
Menindee is a small Darling River town of about 550 people in the Far West, 1 h 15 min by road from Broken Hill and on the Broken Hill Xplorer train line. People come for Kinchega National Park, the Menindee Lakes and the river red gums, not for the town. One night covers the park and the lakes; two nights suit campers, birdwatchers and anglers. Summer heat is the main risk, and only Telstra has reliable coverage.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer days can pass 40°C and the ground is hotter: carry water, walk early, and do not walk to the park in the heat.
- Only Telstra covers Menindee; other networks drop out. Phone numbers here use the 08 area code, not 02.
- Broken Hill runs on Australian Central time while Menindee follows New South Wales time: you gain or lose 30 minutes on the drive.
- Fuel, food and phone signal are limited: fill up and buy supplies in Broken Hill if you are heading further out.
- Kinchega and lake access can change with water levels and park closures: check the NSW National Parks site before you drive in.
A quiet town where the real risks are heat, distance and isolation: carry water, tell someone your route, and do not rely on phone signal outside Telstra coverage.
