Menghai
勐海县
Go for 2 nights if you care about Pu'er tea or Dai village life; skip it if you want big-city sights — this is a rural county, not a city.
Menghai is a tea county in Xishuangbanna, about 50 km and 1 hour from Jinghong, known as a core production area for ripe Pu'er and for Dai and Bulang villages around the tea mountains. There is no airport and no railway station; you arrive by road. Two nights lets you see one tea mountain and one Dai village properly. One night only works if you hire a driver for a full day.

Get around
Road only. Menghai Town is small enough to walk. For tea mountains and villages, hire a car and driver for the day — mountain roads are narrow and some are unpaved, and public buses run between townships but not to individual tea villages. Taxis and Didi work inside the county seat; outside it, agree the fare and waiting time before you leave.
See and do
Known for
- Pu'er tea production (Menghai Tea Factory / Dayi)
- Bulang Mountain and Nannuo Mountain tea areas
- Dai Buddhist temples and stilted villages
- Jingzhen Octagonal Pavilion

Sleep
- Menghai Town (county seat)
- Where the buses, market and most guesthouses are. Best base if you have no car: tea shops, restaurants and the bus station are walkable.
- Mengbalanaxi / Manxing Lake area
- Resort-style stays along G219 with the Yuechun hot springs nearby; you need a car or taxi for everything.
- Daluo Town (near the Myanmar border)
- For Mengjinglai village and the border market; far from the tea mountains, so pick one or the other.
- Tea-mountain villages (Nannuo, Bulang)
- Simple guesthouses in tea villages; book through a tea contact, and expect basic facilities and cold nights in winter.

Scams and watch-outs
- No airport and no train station: everything goes through Jinghong, 50 km away.
- Rainy season (May–Oct) brings heavy rain, slippery mountain roads and leeches on forest trails.
- Tea is sold by weight and grade with no fixed price: taste first, compare at least three shops, and agree the total before packing.
- Some border areas near Myanmar require care; carry your passport and check current local advice before travelling to the Daluo/Mohan side.
- English is limited outside hotels; have your destination written in Chinese.
Menghai is a rural county and generally calm; the real risks are mountain roads in the rain, long drives with unfamiliar drivers, and tea purchases made without tasting or comparing.
