Memmingen
Give Memmingen one night, or use it as a cheap-flight landing pad: the walled old town is a half-day, not a base for the Allgäu.
Memmingen is a 42,000-person town in Bavarian Swabia with a walkable medieval core: about 2 km of town wall, five gates and towers, and St Martin's church at 65 m. Most foreign travellers arrive because Allgäu Airport (FMM) 4 km east sells itself as "Munich West" — it is not Munich, and the town itself is a half-day plus a night, not a multi-day destination.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake with eye contact; 'Guten Tag' or 'Hallo'; avoid: Hugs with people you have just met
- Names: Herr / Frau plus surname until invited to use first names; avoid: Using 'du' with officials or older strangers
- Punctuality: Arrive on time for tours, dinners and appointments; avoid: Being more than 5–10 minutes late without a message
- Queues and rules: Follow signs, wait at red lights, sort rubbish; avoid: Walking in cycle lanes
- Conversation: Direct and factual; people say what they mean; avoid: Taking directness as rudeness, or joking about the Nazi era
- Home visit: Bring flowers (odd number, not red roses) or wine; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving early
- Paying: Say the total including tip as you pay; avoid: Leaving coins on the table and walking off
Scams and watch-outs
- Low-cost airlines sell FMM as "Munich West": it is 115 km from Munich, about 1 h 15 min by train from Memmingen station.
- Airport buses run roughly every 30 min between about 05:00 and 23:00; card payment on board is not always possible, so carry cash.
- After about 19:00 no regular town buses: plan the Anrufsammeltaxi or walk.
- St Martin's tower is only open on guided tours, seasonally May–October; English tours need asking in advance.
- The Wallenstein Festival runs every four years, not annually — check the year before you book around it.
Very safe for a town of this size; the real risks are an early flight with no bus, ice on the pavements in winter, and bikes on the shared paths.
