Melrose
Give Melrose one full day and one night: abbey, Eildon Hills walk and Abbotsford House. Two nights only if you add Dryburgh and the Borders Abbeys Way.
Melrose is a small Borders town, population about 1,700, built around a ruined Cistercian abbey and the triple peaks of the Eildon Hills. Most visitors come by bus or train from Edinburgh and see it in a day; a night here lets you walk the hills at dusk and reach Abbotsford House before the coaches.
