Melk
Half a day for the abbey, one night if you want the Wachau by bike or boat; skip as a base and sleep in Vienna or Krems instead.
Melk is a small Danube town of about 5,300 people at the western end of the Wachau, 86 km west of Vienna. Almost everyone comes for the Benedictine abbey on the bluff above the river, which takes two to three hours. The old centre is ten minutes across on foot, so the town works as a half-day stop or a single night between Vienna and Krems, not as a multi-day base.

Get around
The centre is walkable in about 10 minutes end to end. The abbey sits on the bluff east of the centre, entered from the east side. Nextbike rental is €1/hour or €10/day. Buses and trains link the Wachau villages; boats run Melk–Emmersdorf–Spitz–Dürnstein–Krems from mid-April to October.

Scams and watch-outs
- Abbey hours change by season: May–Sep to 17:30, Mar–Apr and Oct to 16:30, Nov–Mar guided tours only at 11:00 and 14:00. Check before you travel.
- Boat services on the Wachau line stop outside mid-April to October; do not plan a river arrival in winter.
- The abbey ticket booth is on the south side and the entrance on the east: allow a few minutes to walk round.
- Melk is a stop, not a base. Two nights here leaves you short of time for Vienna or Krems.
Melk is a small, low-risk town; the real issues are seasonal closures, the last boat or train of the day and unlit stretches of the Danube cycle path after dark.
