Day trip from Melbourne to Phillip Island: how to get there and what to do

Phillip Island sits about 140 km southeast of Melbourne, reached by the M1 then the Bass Highway and a short bridge at San Remo. Driving is the simplest option and the only one that lets you move between the island's stops on your own schedule. Allow 90 minutes in light traffic and up to two hours on a Friday afternoon or a summer weekend.

Public transport exists but is slow and does not reach the penguin parade. V/Line runs trains from Southern Cross to Frankston or to Koo Wee Rup, and connecting buses serve the island, but the last legs are infrequent and the evening return after sunset is the weak point. Day tours from Melbourne solve the two hard parts: the drive and the late return. Most leave the city in the early afternoon, stop at a wildlife park or the Nobbies, and finish at the Penguin Parade before heading back to Melbourne around 9–11pm.
