Melbourne
Best areas to stay in Melbourne by traveller type
For a first trip, stay in the CBD or Southbank: walkable to laneway cafés, sport and transport, 3–4 nights. Families do better in St Kilda or Docklands for space and the beach; budget and solo travellers get more for the money in Fitzroy, Carlton or North Melbourne, 10–20 minutes by tram.

Top picks
Melbourne spreads out, but the tram grid makes almost anywhere central workable. The choice is really about what you want within a five-minute walk: nightlife and coffee, a beach, or a quiet street with a supermarket.
The CBD is the default for a first visit. You can walk to the laneways, Queen Victoria Market, the MCG and Flinders Street Station, and the free tram zone covers the core. Southbank, across the river, is quieter at night and good for river views and the arts precinct.
Fitzroy and Carlton suit travellers who want cafés, bars and cheaper beds. St Kilda is the beach option and a reasonable base for families. Docklands has newer apartments and is inside the free tram zone, though it feels emptier than the rest.
- Pick the CBD for 2–3 nights and a first visit; you lose less time in transit.
- Pick Docklands or St Kilda for 4+ nights with children.
- Pick Fitzroy or Carlton if price matters more than doorstep location.
| Area | Best for | Typical nightly price (2026 estimate) | Getting around |

| Southbank | Couples, arts and river views | A$200–400 (check) | Walk over the river; tram on St Kilda Road |
| Fitzroy | Solo travellers, nightlife, coffee | A$150–280; A$40–65 dorm (check) | Tram 11 or 96 towards the CBD |
| Carlton | Budget, students, museums | A$140–260; A$40–60 dorm (check) | Tram 1 or 6 towards the CBD |
| St Kilda | Families, beach, long stays | A$170–320 (check) | Tram 96 or 16 towards the CBD (check) |
| Docklands | Families and groups wanting apartments | A$200–380 (check) | Free tram zone; walk to Southern Cross |
Rates swing with events and season; treat as a band, not a quote (check).
Prices and hours
Melbourne accommodation is priced by the night and by the event calendar, not by season alone. Big event weeks tighten supply and lift rates; outside those weeks, mid-range rooms in the CBD are easier to find and cheaper (check).
Most hotels run a 24-hour or late desk; hostels usually have limited reception hours, so tell them if you arrive on a late flight. Check-in and check-out times vary by property — confirm yours before booking (check).
Trams, trains and buses use the Myki card. Touch on and off; fares are capped per day. Inside the free tram zone in the CBD and Docklands you do not need to touch on at all.

Getting there
Melbourne Airport (MEL) is north-west of the centre. The SkyBus runs to Southern Cross Station, where you can connect to trains, trams and taxis. A taxi or rideshare is often faster at night and cheaper for groups of three or more (check).
Avalon Airport, south-west of the city, is used by some low-cost flights; the transfer is longer, so check the schedule before booking a late arrival (check).
Within the city, the tram grid does most of the work. Southern Cross and Flinders Street are the main rail hubs for day trips, including the Great Ocean Road and Phillip Island tours.
- Land before 22:00 if you can; late arrivals limit hostel check-in and tram frequency (check).
- Buy or top up a Myki at the airport or Southern Cross before your first tram.
- If you stay in the free tram zone, you can skip the card for short CBD trips.
Tips
Book early for event weeks and check whether your rate includes breakfast; CBD cafés are good but not cheap.
A CBD or Southbank base saves tram time on a 2–3 night trip. A Fitzroy or St Kilda base suits longer stays where you want a neighbourhood feel.
If you are driving the Great Ocean Road afterwards, a hotel with parking or a pick-up point near Southern Cross makes the morning easier.
- Compare the total, not the nightly rate: some apartments add cleaning fees.
- Ask about tram noise if your room faces St Kilda Road or Bourke Street.
- For solo travel, hostels in Fitzroy and the CBD are the easiest place to meet people.
