Melbourne Beach
Give Melbourne Beach 2 nights for a quiet Space Coast beach base; skip it if you want boardwalk bars and crowds — that is Cocoa Beach.
Melbourne Beach is a small barrier-island town of about 3,100 people on Florida's Space Coast, reached by crossing from Melbourne on US-192 through Indialantic, then turning south on FL-A1A. There is no boardwalk and no nightlife strip: the draw is a long, low-rise ocean beach, the Indian River Lagoon on the other side, sea-turtle nesting in summer and a short drive to Sebastian Inlet. Two nights covers it; three if you fish, kayak or golf.

Get around
A car is the practical default: FL-A1A runs the length of the island and US-192 is the only nearby bridge to the mainland. Space Coast Area Transit buses cover Brevard County at $1.25 a ride, but service is thin and slow for beach hopping. Bikes work well on the flat island; the beach itself is walkable for miles.

- Walk to the beach access, the pier area and the few restaurants; best for a car-free evening.
- South FL-A1A (Coconut Point to Floridana Beach)
- Motels and small resorts along the beach; quieter, cheaper, but you need a car for everything.
- Indialantic and Melbourne Beach causeway side
- Just north across the bridge: more rooms, more food, 5–10 min drive to the sand.
- Melbourne mainland
- Cheapest beds and the widest choice; 15–25 min drive each way to the beach.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Rip currents are the main real danger: swim near a lifeguard, and if caught, swim parallel to shore.
- Sea-turtle nesting runs roughly May–Oct: no lights on the beach at night, no touching turtles or nests, and fill in holes you dig.
- Summer afternoon thunderstorms are routine; lightning on an open beach is a genuine risk — leave when you hear thunder.
- Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov, with the highest risk Aug–Oct; check forecasts and have a plan B inland.
- Beach driving is not allowed here; do not follow tyre tracks onto the sand.
- Some small motels and restaurants close in the slow weeks — check hours before you drive out.
A low-crime small town; the risks that matter are water and weather — rip currents, lightning and summer storms — plus no lighting on the beach during turtle season.
