Medjumbe

Go if you want a private-island escape with diving and birdwatching; 3–4 nights are enough. Skip if you're on a budget or want cultural sights — this is pure beach-and-reef.

Medjumbe is a tiny private island in the Quirimbas Archipelago, about an hour by small plane north of Pemba. A dozen bungalows face the lagoon, each with a deck, plunge pool and outdoor shower. The island draws couples and honeymooners for the quiet, plus nature lovers for the birdlife and near-pristine hard coral reefs. There is no village, no shop, no road — just sand, scrub, an old lighthouse and the resort.

Get around

No roads or vehicles. Walk the sandspit between bungalows, the beach and the old lighthouse. The resort runs boat transfers for diving and snorkelling.

Scams and watch-outs

  • The island is tiny — if you need nightlife or variety, stay in Pemba instead.

Medjumbe is very safe within the resort perimeter. The main risks are sunburn, strong currents during diving and flight cancellations in the wet season. Check Mozambique travel advice for Cabo Delgado province before booking.
