Mechelen sits halfway between Brussels and Antwerp, 25 minutes by train from either, and its historic core is compact enough to walk end to end in half an hour. It was the capital of the Netherlands under Margaret of Austria from 1506 to 1530, and the carillon school in St Rumbold's tower still trains players from around the world. Most travellers see it as a day trip; a night buys you the Saturday market and an evening on the Vismarkt.
