Mecca is closed to non-Muslims: only Muslims can enter the central area around the Grand Mosque, so plan this page only if you are travelling as a Muslim pilgrim.

Mecca is the holiest city in Islam and the destination of the Hajj and Umrah. Non-Muslims are not permitted to enter the city's sacred zone, and road checkpoints on the approaches enforce this. Pilgrim visas and permits are handled through official channels, with Hajj places allocated to each country by quota.

Language

Arabic is the only official language, written right to left. English is widely used in airports, hotels, malls and among younger Saudis; many service workers speak Hindi/Urdu, Tagalog or Bengali. A few Arabic greetings go a long way.

  • Non-Muslims cannot enter Mecca's sacred zone; do not attempt to bypass checkpoints.
  • Book Hajj and Umrah only through the official platforms or licensed operators; check current rules.
  • Crowds and heat are the main health risks; follow official guidance.
  • Hajj visas are allocated by country quota through official channels; apply well in advance.
