Mbombela (Nelspruit)
Use Mbombela as a 1–2 night staging base for Kruger and the Panorama Route, not as a sightseeing city: the town itself has little to see.
Mbombela — still widely called Nelspruit — is the Lowveld's service city and the closest major South African city to Maputo. Almost nobody comes for the town: they come because Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (MQP) is 25 km out, the N4 runs to the Kruger gates and Mozambique, and the Panorama Route escarpment is a morning's drive west. Two nights is the useful maximum unless you are working or visiting family. It is also the practical answer to a common problem: cheap beds, supermarkets, car hire and a hospital, within reach of a park where lodges cost many times more.
