Maynooth
Go for 1–2 nights only as a cheap Algonquin Park base: the village itself is a 10-minute walk, and the park's Hwy 60 gate is about 30 min away.
Maynooth is the main village of Hastings Highlands township in eastern Ontario, on Highway 62 between Bancroft and Barry's Bay. It is not a sightseeing town: people sleep here to reach Algonquin Provincial Park, Lake St. Peter Provincial Park and the snowmobile and dog-sled trails of the highlands. One night covers the village; two or three nights make sense if you are paddling, hiking or riding.

The village is walkable end to end in about 10 minutes. Everything else — Algonquin's Hwy 60 gate, Lake St. Peter, the trailheads — needs a car. There is no local bus; check for any seasonal shuttle before you rely on one.

- Winter driving on Hwy 62 and the side roads is snow-and-ice driving: winter tires and daylight travel.
- Blackflies and mosquitoes are heavy from late May into July; bring repellent and long sleeves.
- Many cafés and shops run short seasonal hours or close entirely outside summer: check before you drive out.
Very safe: the real risks are wildlife on the roads at dawn and dusk, winter driving, and getting lost on back roads with no cell signal. Tell someone your route before you head into the park.
