Mayerthorpe
Stop for 2–3 hours on Highway 43, not a night: the Fallen Four memorial, the Rochfort trestle and a museum, then drive on to Whitecourt or Edmonton.
Mayerthorpe is a town of about 1,300 people on Highway 43, roughly 120 km (75 min) northwest of Edmonton and on the road to Grande Prairie and the Alaska Highway. It is a pit stop, not a destination: a memorial park, a pioneer museum and one of North America's longest wooden rail trestles sit within 10 km of the junction. Sleep in Whitecourt, 25 minutes away, unless you are camping.

Get around
Drive or walk. The town is small enough to cover on foot along 50 Street, but the memorial, museum and trestle are spread along Highway 43, so you need a car to see all three. Highway 22 (Cowboy Trail) meets Highway 43 in town; Highway 18 passes just north and links to Barrhead and Westlock.
