Mauritania month by month
Mauritania splits into three climate zones: the Atlantic coast (Nouakchott, Nouadhibou, Banc d'Arguin), the Adrar desert (Atar, Chinguetti, Ouadane, Terjit) and the Senegal River valley (Rosso, Kaédi). The desert drives the decision — it is only comfortable from November to February. The coast stays workable for more of the year, and the river valley is the only part that gets real rain.

The three zones and when each works
The Adrar is the reason most travellers come, and it is also the least forgiving. November to February gives warm days and nights that drop to around 5 °C, so pack a real jacket. From March the sandstorms begin, and by May the interior is above 40 °C through September. October cools late in the month and agencies reopen.
The Atlantic coast is moderated by trade winds. Nouakchott and Nouadhibou are tolerable for much of the year, though July to September bring humid heat. Banc d'Arguin, the bird and Imraguen village area, is best October to March.
The Senegal River valley around Rosso and Kaédi is the only region with a real rainy season, July to September. Early in the year the Harmattan carries dust. If the river valley is on your route, aim for November to February or late October.
What the season means for packing
For a November-to-February desert trip, layers matter more than you expect: warm days, nights that can approach 5 °C, and wind in the open. Sun protection, a scarf for dust and a head torch for desert camps are standard. For a coast-only trip in the shoulder months, light clothing plus a windproof layer for Nouadhibou covers it.
If you travel in the hot months anyway, treat it as a coast trip and plan desert days for early morning only.
