Matthews
Skip as a base unless you have a reason to be in southeast Charlotte: it is a half-day town, 30–40 min by car from Uptown Charlotte.
Matthews is a small Mecklenburg County town on the southeastern edge of Charlotte, about 27,000 people, with a walkable old centre on North Trade Street: a heritage museum, a restored train depot and visitor centre, a coffee roaster and a brewery-style ale house. There is no rail station and no airport of its own; CATS buses run to Charlotte seven days a week, and most visitors arrive by car on US-74 (Independence Blvd). Treat it as a two-to-four-hour stop or a cheaper bed for a Charlotte trip, not a destination in itself.

Etiquette, safety and scams

- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics

Scams and watch-outs
- No train or light-rail station in Matthews: plan on a car, a bus or a rideshare.
- US-74 (Independence Blvd) is a busy highway with fast traffic; use crossings and avoid walking the service-road edges at night.
- Summer afternoons are hot and humid; do the old centre in the morning.
- Hotel rates spike when Charlotte has a big event or race weekend: book early.
Matthews is a low-crime suburban town; the real risks are highway traffic on US-74, summer heat and leaving valuables visible in a parked car.
