Give Matsuyama 1–2 nights: Dōgo Onsen at opening, the castle by ropeway, then trams between them. Base near Dōgo or Okaido, not the JR station.
Matsuyama is Shikoku's largest city and its sights sit in two clusters about 3 km apart: Dōgo Onsen and the castle hill. One full day covers both if you start early; a second night buys Dōgo Park, Isaniwa Shrine and a slower bath. It is a calm, walkable city that rewards a short stay rather than a long one.

Get around
Trams are the workhorse: flat fare ¥200 per ride, a one-day pass around ¥400. Route 5 links JR Matsuyama Station, the castle and Okaido with Dōgo Onsen; route 3 links Dōgo with Matsuyama-shi Station (Shieki). The centre is walkable. Iyotetsu buses start around ¥150 and reach the suburbs; buy an IC card at Shieki if you will spend more than about ¥2,000 on Iyotetsu transport.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Dōgo Onsen's main bathhouse has had closure and renovation periods: check the official site before you go.
- Trams have no transfer discount; a one-day pass only pays off from three rides.
- Many sights close one day a week and over New Year (roughly 29 Dec–3 Jan): check each site.
- Summer is hot and humid; the rainy season runs late June into mid July.
Matsuyama is a low-crime city and safe to walk at night in the centre and Dōgo. The real risks are summer heat, tram and bicycle traffic, and slips on wet bathhouse floors: use the handrails.
