Matsushima is a small bay town 40 minutes by train from Sendai, known for roughly 260 pine-covered islets and counted among Japan's three classic views. Sights sit within walking distance of Matsushima-Kaigan station, so most travellers do it as a day trip; a night buys an early ferry and empty temple paths.

Get around
The seafront sights — ferry pier, Godaido, Zuigan-ji, Fukuura Island — are walkable from Matsushima-Kaigan station. Hilltop viewpoints (Saigyō Modoshi no Matsu Park, Sōkanzan, Ōgitani) need a taxi or a long walk. Buses are sparse; a rental car helps for Oku-Matsushima.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- JR Matsushima station on the Tohoku Main Line is 20+ min walk from the shore; use Matsushima-Kaigan instead.
- Ticket machines at Sendai may lack English: write the destination in characters or ask staff.
- Ferry and some museum hours shrink in winter: check before you go.
- Zuigan-ji is a working temple with tour groups and megaphones; go at opening for quiet.
Very safe. The real risks are slippery wet boardwalks and ferry piers, summer heat, and winter ice on temple steps; the 2011 tsunami caused only minimal damage here and the sights are open.
