Matsumoto is a small city in Nagano at the eastern edge of the Japan Alps, built around Matsumoto Castle, one of the twelve original keeps left in Japan. The station area is plain; the sights sit 15–25 minutes north on foot. Most travellers pass through on the way to Kamikochi, Takayama or Hakuba, and one night covers the castle, the old streets and a soak.

The Alpico Town Sneaker loop bus runs every 30 min from the station to the main sights, ¥200 per hop or ¥500 for a day ticket (2026 estimate). - Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Town Sneaker buses stop in the early evening: check the last loop before you rely on it.
- The castle keep has steep, original stairways; no lifts, and queues form by mid-morning in spring and autumn.
- Route 158 to Kamikochi and Takayama is narrow and mountain-grade: avoid driving it at night or in winter.
- Some ryokan and small restaurants are cash only.
Matsumoto is a low-crime, walkable city; the real risks are winter ice on pavements, mountain weather on Route 158 and the castle's steep stairs.
