Matsue is the castle town of old Izumo, sitting between Lake Shinji and an inner sea. The centre splits at the Ōhashi River: station, hotels and shops south; castle, samurai street and museums north. Most sights are walkable, so one full day covers the core and a second night buys Izumo Taisha or a slower lake evening.

Get around
Walk the centre: station to castle is about 25 min. The red Lake Line loop bus runs every 30 min past the main sights (one ride ¥210, day pass ¥520, 2-day ¥1,050). Bikes rent near the station from about ¥500 a day. JR and the Ichibata Railway cover Izumo and the lake's north shore.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- San'in winters bring real snow: January and February can slow buses and the lake road.
- Many sights close by 17:00–18:30; plan the castle and museums before late afternoon.
- Some museums shut one day a month (often the third Tuesday): check before you go.
- The castle keep has steep original stairs; hold the handrail and wear grippy shoes.
Matsue is a low-crime, quiet city; the real risks are winter snow and ice on the lake road, summer heat, and museums that close earlier than you expect.
