Matlock
Give Matlock one full day: Matlock Bath's gorge, Heights of Abraham cable car and a riverside walk. Sleep one night if you want Cromford and the tram museum too.
Matlock is two places: the workaday town with the shops and the station, and Matlock Bath 2.5 km south, where the Derwent cuts a limestone gorge and Victorian visitors built a promenade. It is the southern gateway to the Peak District, 20 miles north of Derby on the A6, and most people come for a day rather than a week. Base here for the Derwent Valley mills, Cromford and the cable car, not for a big-city break.

Get around
The town, Matlock Bath and Cromford sit on one bus corridor along the A6; local services run roughly every 20–30 min by day, thinner in the evening and on Sundays (check timetables). The Derwent Valley line links Matlock, Matlock Bath and Cromford to Derby. Walking the riverside path between the town and Matlock Bath takes about 40 min; the cliff path over High Tor is steeper and can be muddy.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Village buses away from the A6 can be school-run only: check the day and time before you rely on one.
- Crich Tramway Village is closed from November to mid-March and has no Sunday bus service: check before travelling.
- Matlock Bath promenade is packed with motorcycles on summer Sundays; parking fills early.
- The walk up from Whatstandwell station to Crich is a steep 1.5 miles: take the bus instead.
- Some riverside and gorge paths flood or turn slippery after heavy rain.
A low-crime small town; the real risks are steep, slippery gorge paths, fast A6 traffic where there is no pavement, and deep water in the Derwent after rain.
