Maryborough, Queensland
Maryborough
Give Maryborough one night, two at most: the Wharf Street heritage precinct and Queens Park are a half-day, and Hervey Bay's whale season is the reason to stay longer.
Maryborough is a small Queensland city three hours north of Brisbane, built on timber and river trade and best known for its restored colonial streets, its Queenslander houses and the Mary Poppins author born here. The historic centre is compact and walkable; the rest of the region is farmland, beaches and islands reached by car. Most travellers use it as a night between Brisbane and Hervey Bay rather than a destination in itself.

Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Maryborough West station is not in the city: the connecting shuttle has to be booked when you book the train.
- Summer heat and humidity are real; plan the walking for morning.
- The river floods in big wet seasons — check road closures before driving in heavy rain.
- Rural roads have wildlife at dawn and dusk; avoid driving them then if you can.
Maryborough is a quiet regional city and street crime is low; the practical risks are summer heat, river flooding in the wet season and wildlife on rural roads at dawn and dusk.
