Marumbi
Go only if you want a quiet, off-grid hiking base with no road access: one night camping, arrive and leave by train. Skip if you need shops, restaurants or a fixed schedule.
Marumbi is a tiny railway stop in the Serra do Mar mountains, reachable only by the scenic Curitiba–Morretes train. There are no roads, no shops, no restaurants — just a free campsite with hot showers, a small museum and trails into the Atlantic Forest. It works for one night as a quiet break between Curitiba and the coast, but only if you carry your own food and water.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, hug or cheek kiss (one in São Paulo, two in Rio); avoid: Being stiff with new acquaintances
- Gestures: Use thumbs-up freely; avoid: The OK hand sign (it is rude)
- Language: Try Portuguese; say obrigado/obrigada; avoid: Defaulting to Spanish
- Time: Expect relaxed social punctuality; avoid: Being late for tours and flights
- Beach: Bring only a towel, cash and a copy of your ID; avoid: Leaving things unattended
Scams and watch-outs
- No food, drink or supplies for sale — bring everything you need.
- Trains pass only twice a day (once each direction); missing yours means waiting until the next day.
- The Serra Verde Express stop at Marumbi may not be guaranteed — confirm with the operator before booking.
- Leeches are common on wet trails; wear long trousers and closed shoes.
- No phone signal in much of the area.
Marumbi is very safe — no crime, no traffic. The real risks are weather (hypothermia in rain, heatstroke in summer), leeches and getting lost on unmarked trails. Carry a whistle, a headlamp and a paper map.
