Marulan
Stop 60–90 min off the Hume for the town centre, cafe and limestone clock; sleep only if you need a cheap break on the Sydney–Canberra run.
Marulan is a 1,200-person town on the Hume Highway and the 150° meridian, about 1 h 45 min from Sydney and 1 h from Canberra. Almost every south-west drive passes it; the freeway services are the default, but the old town one exit away has a park, a cafe, a pub and the Southern Hemisphere's largest road-transported limestone boulder. It is a rest stop, not a destination: plan an hour, or one night if you are breaking a long drive.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- The Hume services and the town are on different exits: northbound use the services exit, southbound the town has its own.
- No bus or taxi service in town; without a car you are limited to the station and George Street.
- Bungonia caves need torches and a check on air conditions before you enter.
- Summer can push past 35 °C and the highway is busy on holiday weekends.
Very safe for a small highway town; the real risks are driving fatigue on the Hume, summer heat, and wildlife on rural roads at dawn and dusk.
