Romantic things to do in Marrakech

Marrakech rewards a slow evening more than a checklist. Start at Jemaa el-Fnaa as the light drops, when the juice stalls give way to food stalls and the drum circles start, then walk ten minutes into the medina for dinner on a riad roof. The noise of the square below and the quiet above is the pairing most couples remember.

In daylight, pick one garden and one interior rather than three. Jardin Majorelle is small and busy; a timed online slot saves the queue. Bahia Palace and the Ben Youssef Madrasa are tiled, shaded and quick to walk. A hammam in the late afternoon resets you before dinner.

If you want the desert or the mountains in the frame, a day trip to the Agafay or the Ourika Valley is doable, but it eats the day. Two nights in the medina plus one excursion is a better shape than three excursions.

Everything on this list sits within about 3 km of Jemaa el-Fnaa. The medina is car-free and easy to walk, but lanes are unsigned and phone signal drops in the covered souks. Download an offline map before you go out, and note the nearest gate to your riad.

Petit taxis wait at the square and at Bab Doukkala. Agree the fare before you get in; meters are often not used for visitors. The walk from Jemaa el-Fnaa to Jardin Majorelle is about 40 minutes, so take a taxi in the heat.

Dress a little more covered than you would at home, especially in the medina and around religious sites. Shoulders and knees covered is the safe default for both men and women.

Photographing people in the square can lead to a request for money. Ask first, or shoot the scene rather than faces. If someone offers to guide you to a tannery, a shop or a 'secret' viewpoint, assume a commission is involved and agree the price up front if you accept.

For dinner, reserve the day before in high season. Many riads serve alcohol only to guests, so check before you plan a wine-led evening. The licensed bars and clubs sit mostly in Gueliz and Hivernage, a short taxi ride from the medina.

March to May and October to November give warm days and cool evenings, which is what most couples want for rooftop dinners and walking. December to February is cold at night, often down to single digits, so pack a jacket.

June to September is hot: 35–40 °C in the afternoon is common, and the square is more pleasant after 20:00. Ramadan changes the rhythm of the day, with restaurants quieter at lunch and busier after sunset; if you are visiting then, plan a later dinner and expect some venues to close.

Friday is a quiet day for some sights and shops, and the square is at its fullest on weekend evenings. If you want the square without the crush, go on a weekday around 17:00.
