Day trip from Marrakech to Essaouira: how to get there and what to do

Essaouira sits on the Atlantic about 191 km west of Marrakech. The road is a straight, well-surfaced highway through argan country; there is no train, so your options are bus, shared or private car, or an organised tour.

Buses are the cheapest and most predictable. CTM and Supratours both run several departures a day from their Marrakech terminals, with the first leaving early morning and the last returning in the late afternoon or early evening. Book the return leg when you arrive in Essaouira, or online a day ahead in high season, because the last bus fills up.

A private car or grand taxi gives you the most control: door-to-door, stops for photos, and a driver who waits. Agree the total return price before leaving and confirm whether waiting time is included. Shared grand taxis leave when full and are cheaper per seat but slower to depart.

Organised day tours bundle transport, a short guided walk and sometimes a stop at an argan cooperative. They cost more per person than the bus but remove all logistics, which is the main reason people choose them for a single day.

Leave Marrakech at 07:00–08:00 to reach Essaouira by mid-morning. Walk the ramparts and the Skala de la Ville first, while the light is soft and the crowds are thin, then drop into the medina lanes behind the port.

Eat lunch at the port fish grills: pick your fish, agree the price per kilo before it is cooked, and expect a simple, fast meal. After lunch, walk the beach south of the ramparts or take a short horse or camel ride if the wind is not too strong.

Spend the last hour on a café terrace near Place Moulay Hassan before catching the 16:00–18:00 bus or meeting your driver. Essaouira is a windsurfing and kitesurfing centre, so afternoons are often breezy and cool even in summer.

A bus day trip is the cheapest option: roughly 160–200 MAD return per person plus lunch. A shared taxi is similar per seat. A private car costs more but splits across up to four people, which often works out close to the bus fare per head.

Add food and incidentals. A port fish lunch runs about 80–150 MAD per person depending on what you pick; a café stop is 20–40 MAD. Entrance to the ramparts and the medina is free, though some small museums and the synagogue charge a modest fee (check current prices).

If you have the time, stay. Essaouira is at its best in the evening, when the day-trippers leave and the ramparts empty out, and again in the early morning. Two nights is the parent guide's recommendation and it fits the town well: one full day for the medina and port, one for the beach or a windsurfing lesson.

An overnight also removes the tightest constraint of a day trip, the last bus. You can eat a relaxed dinner, listen to gnawa music, and travel back the next morning. If your Marrakech schedule is already full, the day trip still works, but treat it as a taster rather than a proper visit.
