Go for 1–2 nights only if you have a car: the beaches and ruins are spread over 20 km, and buses barely reach them.
Maroneia is a village of about 6,400 people on the slopes of Mount Ismaros in Western Thrace, between Komotini and the coast. It was one of the richest ancient Greek colonies in the region, and the ruins — theatre, walls, Hadrian's gate — sit in olive groves rather than behind fences. Most travellers come for the long, empty sandy beaches and use it as a quiet base for a night or two, not as a sightseeing destination in itself.
