Marlborough
Stop for 45–60 minutes to break the Rockhampton–Mackay drive; skip it as a base — one museum, one fuel stop, no beds worth booking.
Marlborough is a highway settlement of about 150 people on the Bruce Highway, 106 km north of Rockhampton and 230 km south of Mackay. It exists for travellers because that stretch has almost nothing else. The historical museum and a diesel-and-premium-only fuel stop are the whole stop; there is no scheduled rail service and no reason to sleep here.

Get around
You need a car. The town sits just off the A1 Bruce Highway via Glenprarie Bypass Road, then Perkins Road and Fossey Drive. Watch the signage in both directions — the turn is easy to miss at highway speed. A rail line passes through but carries no scheduled passenger services.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- The highway turn-off is poorly signed and easy to miss at 100–110 km/h; slow early.
- The Caltex on Perkins Road sells only diesel, 91 and 98 octane — no E10, 94 or 95. Fill up in Rockhampton or Mackay instead; prices here are high.
- Kangaroos and cattle on the road at dawn and dusk; avoid driving this stretch after dark.
- Wet season (Dec–Mar) can close the Bruce Highway with flooding; check road conditions before setting out.
Low crime, high road risk. The real hazards are the highway turn-off, wildlife at dawn and dusk, and wet-season flooding that closes the Bruce Highway.
