Marla
Treat Marla as a fuel-and-sleep stop, not a destination: 1 night, or a 30–60 min break if you are driving the Stuart Highway.
Marla is a service town of about 100 people on the Stuart Highway, at the northern end of the Oodnadatta Track. There is no sightseeing beyond the outback itself: it exists to refuel cars, feed drivers and give one bed between Coober Pedy and Alice Springs. Plan it as logistics, and it works well.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances are huge: Coober Pedy is about 200 km south, Alice Springs about 400 km north, Oodnadatta about 200 km west along the Oodnadatta Track.
- The Oodnadatta Track is unsealed and can close after rain: check road conditions before leaving the bitumen.
- Only Telstra has mobile coverage in Marla; other networks drop out on the highway.
- Fuel up whenever you can: the next servo is hours away in any direction.
- Summer heat is dangerous for cars and people; carry water and never leave a vehicle on a remote stretch.
Marla itself is quiet and safe; the real risks are the drive, the heat and the distances. Carry water, fuel early and check road closures before leaving the bitumen.
