About these names
The island has two sides. The French side (north) is Marigot, Grand Case, Orient Bay and the north-east beaches; the Dutch side (south) is Philipsburg, Simpson Bay, Maho and the airport. You cross between them without formalities.
A first visit in Marigot fits in a 1 km box: the waterfront market and ferry pier at the south end, the marina and terraces to the north-west, Rue de la République behind them and Fort Louis on the hill. Beaches, Grand Case and the Dutch side are all short taxi rides.
