Marathon
Marathon, Ontario
Give Marathon one night as a Trans-Canada stop: Pebble Beach and the museum in an afternoon, Pukaskwa or Neys if you have a second day.
Marathon is the largest town on Highway 17 between Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay, about 3,100 people on a Lake Superior peninsula 5 km off the Trans-Canada. It is a road-trip stop, not a destination: a beach, a small museum, a national park next door and limited beds. Most travellers sleep one night and drive on.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Beds are few and fill in summer: book ahead or plan to camp (check).
- Some motels are dated and priced high for what they are; read recent reviews before booking.
- Pukaskwa operates May–October only; check gate hours before driving in.
- Cell coverage is patchy on Highway 17 between towns (check).
- Moose and deer on the highway at dusk: drive the North Shore in daylight.
A small, quiet town and generally safe. The real risks are the drive: moose and deer on Highway 17 at dusk, winter ice, and long gaps between services. Tell someone your route if you hike the Coastal Trail.
