Marataízes
Two nights if you want beach time and a quiet seafood dinner; one night if you are passing through on the ES-060 coastal road.
Marataízes is a relaxed beach town on the south coast of Espírito Santo, 30 km south of Itapemirim and 50 km from Cachoeiro de Itapemirim. It has a long, straight coastline with three main beaches — Central, Cações and Siri — and a small centre with bars and restaurants. Most visitors come for a weekend or a stopover between Rio de Janeiro and the Espírito Santo beaches.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, hug or cheek kiss (one in São Paulo, two in Rio); avoid: Being stiff with new acquaintances
- Gestures: Use thumbs-up freely; avoid: The OK hand sign (it is rude)
- Language: Try Portuguese; say obrigado/obrigada; avoid: Defaulting to Spanish
- Time: Expect relaxed social punctuality; avoid: Being late for tours and flights
- Beach: Bring only a towel, cash and a copy of your ID; avoid: Leaving things unattended
Scams and watch-outs
- Rip currents at all beaches: swim near lifeguard posts when flagged.
- Cash is still king at smaller bars and stalls; ATMs are in the centre.
- Check tide tables for Siri Beach — at high tide the sand strip narrows.
Marataízes is generally safe for tourists, but avoid walking alone on the beach after dark. Keep valuables out of sight on the sand. Rip currents are the main natural hazard.
