Maple Ridge
One night as a Fraser Valley base, or a stop for Golden Ears Park: the town itself is thin, so come for the trails, not the streets. Check the drive time from your bed.
Maple Ridge is a Fraser Valley suburb of about 82,000 on the north bank of the Fraser, 45–60 min by car from Vancouver when traffic behaves. Downtown Haney has a small heritage strip and a commuter rail station; the real draw is Golden Ears Provincial Park, 15–20 min north. Most travellers use it as a cheaper bed between Vancouver and the valley, or skip it entirely.

Get around
TransLink buses cover the core but run thinly: the R3 rapid bus links Haney Place Exchange to Coquitlam Central (SkyTrain), 701 runs along Dewdney Trunk Road, 791 goes to Braid station weekdays, 595 links Maple Meadows station to Langley. Pay with a Compass Card, Compass Ticket or contactless card; cash on buses gives no change and no transfer. Transfers last 90 min (120 min on West Coast Express). A car is far more practical for Golden Ears and the dykes.

Scams and watch-outs
- Golden Ears Provincial Park fills its day-use lots on summer weekends: arrive before 10:00 or you may be turned away.
- West Coast Express runs Monday–Friday only, westbound in the morning and eastbound in the afternoon: no weekend or midday service.
- Bus service thins out in the evening; the last run from Coquitlam can leave you stranded without a taxi.
- The Lougheed Highway and 224th Street area has visible street drug use and begging: keep to lit main streets at night and use normal city sense.
- Winter rain and early darkness: trails get slick and daylight ends around 16:30 in December.
Low violent-crime city by North American standards; the practical risks are wet winter roads, unlit trails after dark, and street disorder around Lougheed Highway and 224th Street. 911 for anything urgent.
