Manzhouli is China's biggest land port with Russia, a county-level city in Hulunbuir, Inner Mongolia, built on the Chinese Eastern Railway and still shaped by cross-border trade. Streets, squares and shops carry Russian signage and Russian-themed architecture; the grasslands and Hulun Lake sit outside the compact, walkable centre. Two nights covers the National Gate, Matryoshka Square and a grassland half-day; one night is enough if you are passing through by train.

Get around
The centre is compact and walkable; taxis are cheap and the usual way to reach out-of-town sights. City buses cover the railway station, Yidao Street and the National Gate area, but English signage is limited. For Hulun Lake or the grassland, charter a car or join an organised tour — there is no direct public bus.

- Matryoshka Square charges admission and evening lighting hours can change in peak season: confirm on site.
- Border-area rules and cross-border train services to Russia change with visa and customs regulations: check before booking.
- Grassland performances and Hulun Lake trips are seasonal, mainly Jun–Sep.
Manzhouli is generally safe for tourists; the real risks are winter cold and wind chill, icy pavements, and long taxi rides to out-of-town sights. Agree the fare or use a meter before you set off.
