Manisa

Give Manisa one night as a stop between Izmir and Sardis, or skip it: the mosques take half a day and the mountain needs a car.

Manisa is a working Aegean city 65 km northeast of Izmir, on the slope of Mount Spil. Its Ottoman mosques and Mevlevi lodge are restored and free, the bazaar and hamam are not, and the mountain above town is the reason locals come. Most travellers use it as a rail or road stop on the Izmir–Sardis line rather than a base.

Get around

The centre is walkable: Sultan Mosque, Muradiye, Hatuniye, the bazaar and the hamam sit within about 15 minutes on foot. Weeping Rock is a 1 km walk south up Cumludere Cd. Town buses run the main streets and out to the inter-city bus station (Yeni Garaj/Terminal); the railway station is 500 m northeast of the centre.

Etiquette

  • Greeting: Handshake; 'Merhaba' (hello) or 'Selamün aleyküm' in conservative areas; cheek kisses between friends of the same sex; avoid: Offering a hand to a conservative woman first — wait for hers

Scams and watch-outs

  • The archaeological museum in the Muradiye soup kitchen and Ulu Cami have been closed for restoration: check before you walk over.
  • The Rum Mehmet Pasha Bazaar is being converted into a wedding venue, so do not expect a market.
  • The Cumhuriyet Hamamı is still in use but run down; inspect before paying.
  • Mount Spil is a 1513 m mountain: the last stretch to the summit is a walk, and winter snow closes the upper road at times.
  • Summer afternoons are hot and shade on the hill is limited; carry water.

Manisa is a low-crime Turkish city and the centre is fine on foot by day. Standard precautions apply at night around the bars, and the real hazards are summer heat, traffic on the D565 and unmarked trails on Mount Spil.
