Mangochi
Pass through on the way to Cape Maclear or Monkey Bay: a 30-min stop for the Lake Malawi Museum, or one night if you need a budget bed near the lake.
Mangochi is a market town at the southern end of Lake Malawi, where the M3 road meets the lake. Most travellers pass through en route to Cape Maclear or Monkey Bay. The town itself has a small museum and a colonial clock tower, but the main draw is the lakeshore lodges a few kilometres north. Half a day covers the museum; one night works if you want a quiet lake stay without the crowds of Cape Maclear.
