Mangan
Mangan is a one-night stop for permits and supplies before heading to Lachung or Lachen. Skip it as a destination; use it as a base for Dzongu or the Tosar Lake trek.
Mangan is the district headquarters of North Sikkim and the last town with reliable shops before the high valleys. Most travellers pass through in an hour to pick up permits and stock up. If you plan to trek to Tosar Lake or visit the Lepcha reserve of Dzongu, you will need one night here.

Scams and watch-outs
- Permits for North Sikkim (Lachung, Lachen, Yumthang) are checked at Mangan; carry a physical copy and your passport.
- Roads close frequently in winter and monsoon; check the local weather and Sikkim tourism updates before travelling.
- ATMs are scarce; carry enough cash for the whole trip north of Mangan.
- Altitude gain starts here (about 900 m); if you are heading to Lachen (2,700 m) or Yumthang (3,600 m), pace yourself.
Mangan is safe for tourists. The main risks are road conditions (landslides, snow) and altitude sickness if you head north without acclimatisation. Carry cash and a photocopy of your permit.
