Manchester
Give Manchester 2 nights: one full day for Hildene and the Skyline Drive, one for the outlets and village. A car is required; without one, skip it.
Manchester is a small southern Vermont town at the foot of Mount Equinox, split between the historic village on Route 7A and the shopping strip of Manchester Center on Route 7/11/30. It works as a 2-night base for Hildene, the Skyline Drive and the Green Mountains, and as a shopping stop between Bennington and Rutland. There is no train and no useful local bus, so a car decides the trip.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No train station in town; the nearest Amtrak stop is Rutland, about 30 mi away.
- Mount Equinox Skyline Drive is seasonal and tolled — check opening dates and the fee before driving up.
- Many restaurants close early and some shut one or two weekdays; book dinner in foliage season.
- Winter driving on Route 7A and Route 11/30 can be icy; snow tires or AWD help.
- Cell coverage is patchy on back roads toward Dorset and the mountain.
Very safe for a US small town; the real risks are winter driving on Route 7A, deer on the road at dusk, and unlit back roads at night. Lock the car and keep to marked trails on the mountain.
