Manchester, New Hampshire
Manchester
Give Manchester one full day, two nights: Millyard museum, Currier art, a Fisher Cats game. Base here only if you have a car.
Manchester is New Hampshire's largest city, built on the Amoskeag mills along the Merrimack River, about 1 hour north of Boston by car. Downtown Elm Street is walkable and the Millyard holds the museums; everything else — the airport hotels, the speedway, the outlet strip — needs a car. Most travellers pass through for a night or use it as a cheaper, quieter alternative to Boston Logan.

Get around
A car is the practical answer: downtown sights are walkable but the airport, malls and McIntyre ski area are not. MTA buses run hourly on weekdays, one-way $2, and stop around 6PM; the airport bus runs only Monday–Friday. Taxis and rideshare work but are limited late at night. Check downtown parking signs and meters before you leave the car.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Bars close around 1AM and last call is about 12:45AM — earlier than most US cities.
- Winter ice on pavements and steps; snow tyres or all-season tyres if you drive in Jan–Feb.
- MTA buses stop around 6PM and the airport route is weekday-only: plan an evening arrival by taxi or hotel shuttle.
- Some blocks away from Elm Street are quiet after dark; stick to lit streets and use rideshare at night.
Manchester is a normal mid-size US city: downtown is fine in daylight and on busy evenings, but avoid unlit side streets at night and lock your car. The bigger practical risks are winter ice, deer on I-93 at dusk and heat in July–August.
