Manasquan
Go for one beach day or a summer weekend, not a week: the town is a 1-mile beach, an inlet and one Main Street. Base here only if you want the shore, not sights.
Manasquan is a small Jersey Shore borough of about 5,900 people in southern Monmouth County, between Spring Lake and Point Pleasant Beach. It is a beach town: a 1-mile ocean beach split by lifeguard stations, a boardwalk you walk rather than drive, an inlet jetty known for fishing and surfing, and a short Main Street of small shops and restaurants. There is no museum circuit and no nightlife district beyond a few summer bars. One full day covers the beach and the inlet; a weekend covers beach plus a party-boat fishing trip or a drive to a neighbouring shore town. Come between late May and September for swimming, or in the shoulder months for walking and fishing without the badge cost.

Etiquette, safety and scams

- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics

Scams and watch-outs
- Beach badges are required in season and are checked on the sand; buy before you sit down.
- Parking near the beach and inlet fills by mid-morning on summer weekends.
- Rip currents are the real hazard: swim near a lifeguard station and only when guards are on duty.
- Some bars and clubs have dress codes and cover charges in summer; ask before you queue.
- Many seasonal businesses close outside summer.
A low-crime shore town; the real risks are rip currents, sun and traffic. Swim near lifeguards, mind the badge rules and do not leave valuables in a parked car.
