Mallacoota
Give Mallacoota 2 nights if you want Croajingolong walks and a lake paddle; 1 night is enough if you are just breaking the Princes Highway drive.
Mallacoota is Victoria's easternmost town, a small holiday village of about 1,000 people wedged between the ocean, a large inlet and Croajingolong National Park. It is a long detour off the Princes Highway, so it rewards people who stop rather than pass through: two nights buys a beach morning, a lake paddle and a national park walk.

- Dorron Avenue and the waterfront
- Lake-facing units, a few minutes' walk from the shops.
- Betka Road and Bastion Point
- Quieter, closer to the ocean beach and the park entrance; you need a car.
Language
English everywhere, with a fast, informal Australian style: shortened words (arvo, servo, brekkie), 'mate' for anyone and irony as default. Place names across the country come from Aboriginal languages, and signs increasingly use dual names.
- Ask what a place is called in the local language on tours; many parks now use dual names (Uluru / Ayers Rock, K'gari / Fraser Island).
- 'How are you going?' is a greeting, not a question needing a full answer.
Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- The C617 turnoff adds about 20 km each way off the Princes Highway; it is a dead-end road, so you commit to the detour.
- Mobile coverage is patchy outside town: Telstra has 4G over Mallacoota, Optus and Vodafone are patchy or absent — carry a satellite phone if you head into the park.
- Bushfire risk in summer: check the VicEmergency app and local signage before any park walk.
- Swimming is unpatrolled at most beaches — check conditions and never swim alone at Bastion Point.
A quiet, low-crime holiday town. The real risks are bushfire in summer, cold water and unpatrolled surf, and long empty drives on the Princes Highway — carry water and tell someone your plan.
