Malang
Kota Malang
Give Malang 2 nights as a cool-climate base for temples and Bromo tours, or 1 night if you are only passing between Surabaya and the volcanoes.
Malang is East Java's second city, sitting at about 440 m between mountain groups, so days are cooler than Surabaya and nights need a layer. Its draw is colonial streets, two painted kampungs, 8th- to 13th-century Hindu temples on the edge of town, and cheap access to Bromo. Most travellers use it as a base rather than a destination in itself, which is why two nights covers the city and three lets you add a volcano run.

Get around
Ride-hailing (Gojek, Grab) is the default for short hops and is cheap; metered taxis also run, with a minimum fare around Rp30,000. Blue angkot minivans cover fixed routes at flat fares (about Rp4,000, students less). Becak pedicabs suit short old-town hops. The centre is flat and cool enough to walk, but carry a rain layer in the wet season.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Light handshake then hand to chest; smile; avoid: Firm grips
- Left hand: Give and receive with the right; avoid: Passing anything with the left
- Temples: Sarong and sash; step around offerings; avoid: Standing higher than priests
- Keeping calm: Patience; indirect requests; avoid: Anger in public
- Pointing: Thumb; avoid: Index finger
Scams and watch-outs
- Wet season runs roughly Oct–Apr; the driest months are Jul–Aug. Carry a light rain jacket year-round.
- Bromo sunrise tours sold in Malang leave around midnight and return mid-morning: confirm the pickup time, vehicle and whether the park entry fee is included before paying.
- Renting a motorbike for the Bromo road is only for experienced riders; the climbs are steep and riding after dark is not advised.
- Temple sites such as Singosari, Badut and Kidal are active heritage sites: some are gated or staffed only part of the day, so check locally before you set out.
- Traffic in Malang is dense at peak hours; allow extra time for the airport or Surabaya transfer.
Malang is a low-crime city for its size; the real risks are traffic, wet-season rain and unlicensed Bromo tour operators. Use ride-hailing at night, keep bags zipped in markets, and only ride a motorbike if you already ride.
