Málaga
Give Málaga 2–3 nights: old town and Alcazaba in a day, Picasso and the port in another, then beach or Caminito del Rey.
Málaga is the transport hub of the Costa del Sol and the capital of its province, with a compact old town, two Moorish fortresses on one hill and a run of art museums. It works as a 2–3 night city stop on an Andalusia route, or as a base for beach days and day trips along the coast.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Two kisses on the cheek (right then left) between friends and when introduced socially; handshake in business; avoid: Being stiff — Spaniards stand close and touch arms
- Meal times: Late lunch and dinner; long sobremesa (chat after eating); avoid: Rushing to leave or asking for the bill with the last bite
- Noise: Join in the lively conversation; avoid: Reading loud voices as anger
- Siesta hours: Keep noise down in residential buildings 15:00–17:00 and after 23:00; avoid: Phone calls to people at lunch time
- Dress: Smart casual in cities; locals rarely wear shorts in Madrid in town; avoid: Swimwear or bare torsos away from the beach
- Regional pride: Ask about local dishes and festivals; avoid: Assuming Catalan or Basque are dialects of Spanish
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer heat: plan the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro for opening time, not midday.
- The Gibralfaro hill climb is steep; bus 35 runs up but not on Sundays.
- Pickpockets work the old town, the port and bus A from the airport.
- Beach bars and terraces on the sand often charge more than places one street back.
Málaga is a safe city by day and night; the real risks are summer heat, the steep Gibralfaro climb and pickpockets in the old town, the port and on bus A from the airport.
