Take Malacca as a day trip or one night from Kuala Lumpur or Singapore; one night lets you see Jonker Street's weekend night market without rushing.

Malacca is a historic port city on Peninsular Malaysia's west coast, roughly midway between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore by road, and its old centre is UNESCO-listed for showing successive Portuguese, Dutch and British colonial layers on top of the earlier Malacca Sultanate. Jonker Street's Peranakan (Baba-Nyonya) shophouses, the ruined A Famosa fort gate and Christ Church around Dutch Square are close enough together to cover on foot, and the weekend night market turns the old town into a food fair after dark.

The old town is compact and walkable but shadeless at midday; Grab covers longer trips. Intercity buses run frequently to Kuala Lumpur's Terminal Bersepadu Selatan and to Singapore.

  • Midday heat and humidity are heavy with little shade in the fort and square area: plan an indoor museum stop around noon.
  • River cruise boats and some museums close or reduce hours around major Malaysian public holidays: check dates before booking a short visit.
