Maitland is the Lower Hunter's old river town, 30 km and about 30 minutes by train from Newcastle. It is a working city, not a resort: a heritage gaol, a strong regional art gallery, a walkable High Street and the historic village of Morpeth 10 minutes away. Most travellers see it as a half-day or one-night add-on to Newcastle or the Hunter Valley wine country, and that is the right call.

Get around
The Hunter Line links Maitland, High Street, East Maitland, Victoria Street and Metford stations, roughly every 30 minutes. Local buses connect the CBD with Rutherford, Thornton, Morpeth and East Maitland. The sights are spread out, so a car or taxi makes a one-day visit much easier; the CBD itself is walkable.
