Mainz is the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate, a 1,000-year-old cathedral city at the meeting of the Rhine and the Main, about 30 minutes by train from Frankfurt airport. It is small enough to walk in a day, but it works best as a base for the Rheingau and Rhenish Hesse wine country, with Roman remains, a Gutenberg printing collection and a river promenade that fills up on summer evenings.

Scams and watch-outs
- St. Stephan closes for weddings, often Saturdays 13:45–15:00, and the dates are not posted online: go in the morning.
- Two Roman museums are shut: the Museum of Ancient Navigation until late autumn 2026 and the Museum of Archaeology until 2027.
- The Old Jewish Cemetery is a UNESCO site but the interior is usually closed; you can see it from the fence or book a guided tour.
- Mainz Hauptbahnhof is on the west edge of the centre, not in it: allow 15 minutes on foot.
- Carnival week (February) fills hotels and closes some streets; book ahead or avoid.
Mainz is a low-risk city. Watch for bicycles on the promenade, keep an eye on bags at Hauptbahnhof and on packed trams, and ask the price before ordering in bars with no posted menu.
